3d printed spare parts

3D printing for spare parts solves critical challenges for MST Marin

October 26, 2024

Finding spare parts for boats can be a big challenge. We at AM Printservice helped MST Marin solve problems with hard-to-find spare parts using 3D printed solutions. The method saves time, money and creates sustainable solutions.

The challenge: Wear and tear and lack of spare parts

Boats wear out quickly from weather, wind and UV light. Many plastic parts become brittle and crack over time. When original parts are no longer available, owners are faced with costly repairs or having to replace major parts. For MST Marin, this became a recurring problem – simple spare parts such as tamp stops, fittings and clips were often missing. This created unnecessary costs and frustration.

The solution: 3D-printed spare parts from AM Printservice

MST Marin realized that 3D printing could be the solution to quickly create spare parts for older boats. By collaborating with us at AM Printservice, they received high-quality, customized spare parts in both plastic and metal. AM Printservice developed CAD designs and materials that matched the function and strength of the original parts.

Example of a 3D-printed spare part: Tamper stop for Askeladden Z7

A typical example is a customer's broken tamp stop for an Askeladden Z7. These small plastic parts were critical to the boat's automatic furling function but could no longer be ordered. MST Marin created a 3D model of the tamp stop and sent it to us for printing. The result was a durable replacement part in TPU material – strong, flexible and UV-resistant.

Design and material selection are the key to sustainability

For each part, we made careful material choices depending on the application and strength requirements. For the tamp stop, TPU was chosen, a durable and flexible material that protects the boat's surfaces. For fittings and clips, AM Printservice often used PA12 (nylon), a durable material that can withstand maritime wear. This adaptation ensured that the parts worked as well, if not better, than the original parts.

Easy and smooth delivery

MST Marin sent their CAD model to AM Printservice and quickly received their spare parts. Thanks to our fast delivery, the repairs could be carried out without delay. The parts were delivered in the right fit and with a high-quality finish, ready to be installed immediately.

More 3D-printed solutions for marine challenges

AM Printservice has also helped MST Marin with other marine parts such as:

  • Custom fittings: For specific fittings that are no longer available for purchase, saving both time and money
  • Decorative details: Unique parts that enhance the aesthetics of the boat
  • Durable clips and fasteners: Small but important details that hold components in place

Save money with reliable reimbursements

By partnering with AM Printservice, MST Marin has been able to offer its customers durable, customized spare parts using 3D printing technology. This solution saves time and money while ensuring that boats are kept in top condition with reliable replacement parts. For boat owners who have difficulty finding spare parts, 3D printing for spare parts offers an effective and long-term solution.
